High stress jobs increase likelihood of divorce

A recent article offers fresh insight into a leading factor in divorce: the nature of the work we do.

New U.S Census data reveals that the career choice most likely to lead to divorce is front-line military supervisors - those who lead enlisted soldiers into war.

According to the data, these people have the greatest likelihood of seeking divorce by age 30.

That finding makes all the sense in the world. Tough jobs obviously take their toll on relationships. Soldiers conducting tactical operations, and experts in air weaponry also made the top ten. But consider two nonmilitary careers with a high likelihood of divorce:

Logisticians: the people who manage the supply chain for their organizations. Logisticians are responsible for everything coming together in a product's life cycle. They could be in the military. They could just as easily be in any industry.

Mechanics: Like logisticians, mechanics bear responsibility for keeping vehicles in running order, and ensuring the safety of drivers and passengers. With so much on the individual's mind, it is easy to imagine the marital relationship suffering.

This study pinpoints how psychological pressures undermine relationships. These pressures are exacerbated by physical danger, being away from one's spouse for extended periods, and not earning top dollar for this stressful work.

A similar study from Military.com shows that physical danger may actually be less destructive than the raw stress military families deal with. Even couples that don't include deployed service men or women struggle due to marrying young and frequently moving from base to base.

It's a shame that the people who give so much to their country and serve so unselfishly face increased risk of failure in their marriages.

But it's a reminder to all of us that the greatest hazard of a loving relationship is the everyday stress of living and working.

At Mowery Youell & Galeano, we strive to be mindful of these pressures, and sensitive to the struggles our clients are going through.
