Ohio child custody situations can benefit from good co-parenting

Parents dealing with child custody issues, both during and after a divorce, in Ohio know that these matters can be contentious. In fact, many couples find that they continue to fight over child custody matters such as visitation and communication well after the divorce is final. This, some authorities note, can be stressful for children.

Although most parents in Ohio who have gone through a divorce wish to make a child custody agreement that is in the best interest of the child, it is sometimes difficult to make the final arrangement work. This is especially true if one or both of the parents have schedules that they fail to adhere to. In these cases, for example when a parent returns a child late to the custodial parent, some former spouses end up back in court.

Approved by the court at the time of divorce, a child custody agreement details the rules for visitation and the schedule for child custody. In addition to adhering to a schedule, many parents in our state and across the nation find that they must work to co-parent their children even after the divorce is final.

Co-parenting, at least one authority notes, can help a child adjust to the changes in lifestyle that occur after a divorce. This is because, in many cases, the child lives primarily with the custodial parent with visitation with the non-custodial parent. In other families, the parents have joint child custody and the time between parents is divided more equally. In each case, parents try to agree on what is in the best interest of the children, though when their attempts to agree and live with the child custody order fail, they sometimes return to the court for a further review.
