Unpaid Ohio child support can result in jail time

Readers in Ohio know that child support payments are mandatory once they are ordered. In fact, in most divorce cases where a minor child is involved, the noncustodial parent must pay child support. This money is intended to help the custodial parent with the care and support of the child.

When a person in Ohio or elsewhere fails to pay the child support that they owe, a custodial parent has a variety of options as they seek to have the money collected. State agencies are tasked with assisting in this effort. Once found, those who have failed to pay child support can find that they face fines and even jail time in some cases.

One of the ways that are being used to find those who have failed to pay child support is Facebook. One recent report notes that, by using Facebook, agencies may discover that a noncustodial parent has more resources than they have led the court and custodial parent to believe. This is apparently what happened in one case where a man posed for a picture that was posted on the website showing himself with cash.

When a person in Ohio finds that they have not been paid the child support that they are owed by a noncustodial parent of their child, they may wish to consider seeking help to find that individual. By using efforts such as a search of Facebook, it may be possible to learn if the noncustodial parent has income that they have not disclosed. This information could be important if the custodial parent decides to pursue the noncustodial parent for the child support that they have been ordered to pay. For those owing child support, the best practice is to seek a formal modification of a court order when there has been a substantial change in financial circumstances that was not of their own doing.
