What to do if you experience workplace discrimination

Workplace discrimination is unlawful and uncomfortable whether it is over race, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, age, disability or religion. Discrimination can take many forms, including:

  • Unequal pay
  • Denial of compensation or benefits
  • Unfair assignments of maternity leave and disability leave
  • Unbalanced promotions or layoffs

No matter what type of discrimination you face or for what reason, it is unacceptable. Thankfully, laws and agencies protect employees like you from discriminatory practices. You do not simply need to accept mistreatment or leave your job silently because of it. You can stand up for yourself and assert your rights to a fair and comfortable workplace environment. Here are some tips on how to handle workplace discrimination.

Document everything

Documentation is key when proving discrimination. One effective way to record the details of improper conduct is keeping a journal. You can keep a physical journal or a digital one on your phone. In this diary, take note of any incidents, including the date, time, location, people involved and any witnesses. Additionally, keep any objects or photos relevant to the discrimination.

Familiarize yourself with discrimination and employment laws

If you consider filing a complaint of discrimination, read up on some laws that may be relevant to your situation. Numerous federal laws, regulations and rules protect employees from discrimination. Ohio also has its own laws regarding this issue.

Decide how to file a complaint

Once you get legal advice about your situation, you can determine how to move forward. You may want to file a report with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Ohio Civil Rights Commission, the human resources department or your supervisors. You should consider this step carefully and only make a decision once you have the proper guidance.

Seek emotional support

Discrimination is not just a financial or legal issue. It also impacts your mental health. Consider reaching out to a friend, family member, spouse or therapist about any struggles you experience.
