Beware of 'get divorced quick' schemes offered in Ohio

In today’s fast-paced world there are a lot of commercials for products that involve getting something done quickly and inexpensively. These may include a “get rich quick” investment venture, a “finish your degree faster” program or even a “get a quick divorce” proposal.

When two spouses are involved in a closely held business, they have several options for handling the marital asset during a divorce. These options might include selling the business or buying out one spouse. During the recession, neither of these were an option for some married, small business owners.

The debate over same-sex marriage continues across the United States. The ruling made by the Supreme Court of the United States this past year, striking down the Defense of Marriage Act made the denial of federal benefits to same-sex spouses unconstitutional. What it did not do was change same-sex marriage laws on the state level.

Senate Bill 171 would change portion of Ohio child custody laws

The Ohio Senate was asked to address a controversial and difficult subject early this year when Senate Bill 171 was introduced. This bill would have a big effect on family courts, and more specifically, child custody laws in Ohio. Sen. Nina Turner (D-Cleveland) sponsored this bill.

Labor Board Reintroduces Ambush Election Rules

On February 4, 2013, the National Labor Relations Board ("NLRB") announced it would reintroduce procedures designed to speed up the union certification processes.  The proposed amendments are similar to those first proposed in June 2011, referred to by some as the "ambush election rules".  The June 2011 rules were successfully challenged in District Court for having been adopted without a validly constituted quorum and invalidated.  The Board's appeal of that ruling was dismissed, pursuant to a joint stipulation, on December 9, 2013.
