Tricky financial plan didn't stop $4.5 billion divorce award

The 147th richest person on the Forbes list of billionaires -- once the 79th -- made a lot of his money in the potash mining industry, leading to the nickname of the “fertilizer king.” Today, he is estimated to be worth $8.8 billion, but that net worth could change just a little bit if the divorce settlement granting his ex-wife $4.5 billion and million-dollar real estate properties is finalized.

Divorce rate doubles in 2 decades for couples 50 and older

The National Center for Family and Marriage Research at Bowling Green State University has tracked and analyzed U.S. Census Data for the two decades between 1990 and 2010. These researchers found that the data put into hard numbers a trend that many divorce attorneys have noticed, 60 percent according to the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.

Illness can be hard on a relationship, what about in a divorce?

There are a lot of reasons why a relationship may end. In some cases, a spouse may be able to say “that was the moment I knew” and in others the divide may occur over time. According to a recent research study, chronic disease is one of those factors that can take a toll on a marriage, and it likely doesn’t happen all at once.

Custody agreements made today may not work 5 or 10 years later

Possible tax consequences are a conversation that certainly may come up in a family law dispute. Conversely, an agreement reached in a family court has the potential to be used in a dispute in a tax court, as was recently the case for the father of a young boy. It was his conciliation agreement, a type of child custody arrangement available in his jurisdiction, that was the basis of a dispute over unpaid tax liability.
